About Triathlon

The sport of Triathlon on Cayman is organized, promoted and supported by CITA – The Cayman Islands Triathlon Association. Our dedicated membership ranges from serious athletes competing on the world stage to those who have only just ‘dipped their toes’ into Triathlon waters for the first time.

Triathlon for Beginners!Triathlon is a challenging sport that consists of three disciplines completed consecutively: swimming, cycling and running. While challenging, the sport is also very accessible. To participate, you only need a bathing suit, a bicycle, helmet and running shoes.

No special facilities are required, especially in the Cayman Islands where an athlete can make use of the open water and good roads to practice swimming, cycling and running. The duathlon, a sister event to the triathlon, consists of a first run, a cycle and a second run, all back-to-back.

The sport of modern triathlon started in the United States in the 1970s. It has been part of the Olympic Games since the summer games in Sydney in 2000. The sport enjoys a large and ever increasing following. It is estimated that as many as 250,000 people participate in triathlon races in the United States every year.

The table below sets out the standard distances for triathlon races. Races of other distances are also frequently organized, including short races for younger athletes and for beginners. Many races also include a relay component, with up to 3 athletes on each team.

The Cayman Islands Triathlon Association (CITA) seeks to initiate youth and adults to the sport of triathlon and provide competitive events for seasoned triathletes to improve in their sport. CITA seeks to raise the profile of triathlon and promote various forms of multisport as a fitness activity for everyone in the Cayman Islands. CITA also provides opportunities for athletes to compete off-island by organizing teams for various international events. Finally, CITA seeks to foster the development of talented young triathletes in the Cayman Islands and provide opportunities for them to develop and become competitive at an international level.

Want to join us? There’s a warm and supportive Cayman welcome waiting for you. You don’t even need to be experienced in all three Triathlon disciplines of swimming, cycling and running – Many of our members and participants form teams and share the experience - and others provide essential help in helping to organise and marshal our events.

However you decide to do it, just get involved!
